The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game in which players compete for cash or chips. It’s a mix of skill, luck and strategy.

The goal is to have the best hand at the end of a betting round. The player with the best hand wins the pot.

There are a number of different games of poker, each with their own rules and strategies. Some of the more popular variants include Texas hold ’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo and Seven-Card Stud.

Rules of Poker

At the beginning of each betting round, each player is dealt a hand of cards face up. The player who receives the first card, known as the dealer, is the first to deal the next card.

Once the cards are dealt, each player can choose to call or fold. A call means that the player will keep the hand, while a fold indicates that the player will not play any further.

Bluffing

The act of bluffing is an important part of playing poker. It enables players to bet based on their opponent’s hands without giving away the truth of their hand.

Poker Glossary
