The first round of betting starts when all the players receive their two hole cards, and is triggered by mandatory bets called blinds placed into the pot by the two players to the left of the dealer. There is no need to be afraid of these bets – they are there to make sure there is a pot to win for everyone at the table.

After the opening betting rounds, a third card is dealt face up to form what is known as the flop. There is another round of betting, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.

There are many different ways to play Poker, but the most important factor is self-honesty. You can read poker strategy books, study your opponents’ hand histories and even buy fancy software that will calculate percentages for you – but nobody will turn you into a first-rate player but you. This is because it comes down to why you play poker – do you play for fun, to socialize or to prove something? Whatever the reason, your style of play will reflect it.
