The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game with many variants, played by millions of people around the world in home games, casinos, and in tournaments. It is considered the national card game of the United States, and its play and jargon are deeply embedded in American culture. It is a game of incomplete information, in which players place bets on the strength of their own cards and on the probability that other players have stronger hands. Players may also bluff, in which case other players must either call the bluff or concede that they have a weak hand.
The game begins with each player putting in chips (representing money) into the pot, then being dealt 2 cards face down. There are then one or more betting intervals, depending on the poker variant being played. Each player must put in chips equal to the amount of the bet that was made before him, unless he is able to make a higher bet than his opponent(s).
After the first round of betting, 3 more cards are dealt in what is called the “flop”. A further round of betting then takes place, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
Each player aims to make the best 5 card “hand” from their own 2 personal cards and the 5 community cards. Typical poker hands include high pairs, straights, flushes, and full houses. The highest ranking hand is the royal flush, which consists of a 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of the same suit in consecutive order.
