The Basics of Poker

Once everyone has anted up, a hand is dealt. Each player is dealt 2 cards that they hold face-down and are called their hole or pocket cards. Once the players have their 2 cards, a round of betting begins with the player on the chair to their left.

After the pre-flop betting phase, 3 additional cards are dealt to the table that are visible to all of the players. These are known as the flop and they can be used by each player to make a 5-card poker hand. The highest poker hand wins the pot.

After the final round of betting, the players reveal their hands and the winner is determined. The most popular form of poker is Texas Hold’em, but there are many other variations of the game. The game originated in North America and has become a major part of American culture.
